Use Splice in Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code and Codex
Splice is film.fun's AI filmmaking studio. Connect it to your AI assistant and ask for images, video, voice and music in plain words. The assistant works on your Splice account: what it makes appears in your dashboard, and generations spend your credits.
Splice connects over MCP (Model Context Protocol). Every assistant on this page uses the same server address:
https://splice.film.fun/api/mcpBefore you start
- A film.fun account. Sign up at https://splice.film.fun/signup. New accounts get 100 free credits.
- Sign-in. Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code and Codex sign you in with OAuth: you log in with your film.fun account and click Allow. There's no key to paste, and you never type your password into the assistant.
- Agent keys (optional). For scripts, servers or a headless setup, create an
sk_key at https://splice.film.fun/dashboard/api-keys and send it as a bearer token instead. - Permissions. Splice asks for two scopes:
splice:read(see your productions, media, balance and prices) andsplice:generate(create and edit media, which spends credits).
| Assistant | How you add Splice | Sign-in | Plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude (claude.ai, Claude Desktop) | Custom connector | OAuth | Free (one custom connector), Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise |
| ChatGPT | Custom MCP app | OAuth | Business, Enterprise and Edu for all tools; Pro for search and fetch only |
| Claude Code | claude mcp add | OAuth or agent key | Any Claude Code install |
| Codex | codex mcp add or config.toml | OAuth or agent key | Codex CLI, IDE extension and app |
| Cursor, VS Code | One-click install | OAuth | See the developer portal |
Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop)
Plans. Custom connectors work on Free (one custom connector), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds Splice first under Organization settings → Connectors, and members then connect to it. Claude Desktop uses the connectors on your Claude account, so you add Splice once.
Steps.
- In Claude, open Customize → Connectors. On some accounts this is Settings → Connectors.
- Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
- Fill in the form:
- Name:
Splice - Remote MCP server URL:
https://splice.film.fun/api/mcp - Leave any OAuth client ID and secret empty. Claude registers itself with Splice.
- Name:
- Click Add, then Connect. Splice opens: sign in with your film.fun account, check that the page names Claude, and click Allow.
- In a chat, click + at the bottom left, choose Connectors, and turn Splice on.
Connectors directory. Splice has been submitted to Claude's Connectors directory. Once it's listed there, you'll be able to add it from the directory without typing the URL. Until then, use the steps above.
ChatGPT
Plans. OpenAI documents custom MCP apps like this, and the details change often, so check what your account shows:
- Business, Enterprise and Edu get full MCP: Splice's read tools and its generate tools. On Business, only an admin or owner can turn on developer mode.
- Pro can connect MCP servers with read and fetch only, which means Splice's
searchandfetchtools.
Steps. Menu names vary between accounts and change as ChatGPT updates.
- Open the place where ChatGPT adds custom MCP servers:
- On newer accounts, open Plugins (chatgpt.com/plugins), click +, then Add custom MCP server.
- On other accounts, open Settings → Apps → Advanced settings, turn on Developer mode, then click Create app.
- Fill in the form:
- Name:
Splice - MCP server URL:
https://splice.film.fun/api/mcp - Authentication: OAuth. Leave the client ID and secret empty, because ChatGPT registers itself.
- Name:
- Review the warning, select I understand and want to continue, and create the app.
- ChatGPT sends you to Splice. Sign in with your film.fun account, check that the page names ChatGPT and that you'll go back to chatgpt.com, then click Allow.
- In a chat, pick Splice from the tools menu (on newer accounts, type
@and choose Splice).
What it can do. search and fetch read your own productions, media and Motion compositions, plus Splice's public templates and docs. Generate tools spend your credits, and ChatGPT asks you to confirm each write action before it runs.
Claude Code
- Add Splice. Add
--scope userto use it in every project, not just this one.
claude mcp add --transport http splice https://splice.film.fun/api/mcp- Start Claude Code and run
/mcp. Splice shows Needs authentication: choose it, sign in with your film.fun account in the browser, and click Allow. - Ask Claude to "list my Splice productions" to check it works.
With an agent key instead. Create a key at https://splice.film.fun/dashboard/api-keys, then:
claude mcp add --transport http splice https://splice.film.fun/api/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer sk_..."Don't put a key in a project's shared .mcp.json: anyone with the file can spend your credits.
Codex (CLI and IDE extension)
The Codex CLI, the Codex IDE extension and the Codex app share one config file, ~/.codex/config.toml, so you set Splice up once.
Sign in with OAuth.
- Add Splice:
codex mcp add splice --url https://splice.film.fun/api/mcp- Codex detects that Splice uses OAuth and opens a sign-in link (it also prints the link). Sign in with your film.fun account and click Allow.
- Check it with
codex mcp list, or/mcpinside Codex. To sign in again later, runcodex mcp login splice.
Or use an agent key.
- Create a key at https://splice.film.fun/dashboard/api-keys and put it in your shell environment:
export SPLICE_API_KEY=sk_...- Add Splice with the key's variable name (Codex reads the key from the environment, so it isn't stored in the config):
codex mcp add splice --url https://splice.film.fun/api/mcp --bearer-token-env-var SPLICE_API_KEY- That writes this to
~/.codex/config.toml. You can also add it by hand:
[mcp_servers.splice]
url = "https://splice.film.fun/api/mcp"
bearer_token_env_var = "SPLICE_API_KEY"Cursor and VS Code
Both have one-click installs that sign you in with OAuth: Add to Cursor or Install in VS Code. Manual config is on the developer portal.
Other MCP clients
Point any Streamable HTTP MCP client at https://splice.film.fun/api/mcp. A request without a token gets a 401 that points to Splice's OAuth metadata, so clients that support MCP authorization sign in on their own. Others can send Authorization: Bearer sk_.... The full reference is on the developer portal.
What you can ask
Once Splice is connected, ask in plain words. For example:
- "What can I make with Splice, and how many credits do I have?"
- "Show me the video models and what a 5-second clip costs with each."
- "Generate a 9:16 image of a neon-lit ramen stall in the rain. Tell me the price first."
- "Turn that image into a 5-second video with a slow push-in."
- "Write a 20-second voiceover for a coffee ad and generate it in a warm, low voice."
- "Make 30 seconds of lo-fi music for a cooking reel."
- "Upscale the last image in my latest production."
- "Find Splice templates for product shots."
The assistant can use these tools: list_models, get_balance, list_productions, generate_image, generate_video, generate_voice, generate_music, edit_image, upscale_image, upscale_video, get_job, list_compositions, get_composition, render_composition, list_characters, search, fetch. What it makes lands in your Splice dashboard, where you can edit and cut it.
Costs and credits
- Generating and editing spend credits from your Splice account at each model's price; video is priced per second. Reading is free: listing, search, fetch, your balance and the price list.
- New accounts get 100 free credits. Packs: Starter $10 = 1,000 credits · Creator $45 = 5,000 credits · Pro $99 = 11,500 credits · Studio $225 = 27,000 credits. Credits don't expire. See pricing.
- Ask the assistant to check the price and your balance before a big job. Keep tool approval on for generate tools, so you confirm each spend.
- Failed generations are refunded automatically.
Disconnect
- In Splice (works for every assistant): open https://splice.film.fun/dashboard/api-keys and revoke the app under Connected apps. Revoke agent keys on the same page. A revoked app or key stops working at once.
- Claude: Customize → Connectors, open Splice's menu, and click Remove.
- ChatGPT: remove the Splice app from Plugins or from Settings → Apps.
- Claude Code:
claude mcp remove splice, or/mcp→ Splice → Clear authentication to sign out but keep it configured. - Codex:
codex mcp logout spliceto sign out, orcodex mcp remove spliceto remove it.
Troubleshooting
- "Needs authentication" or a 401: sign in again (
/mcpin Claude Code, codex mcp login splicein Codex, or reconnect the connector). - Out of credits (402): top up at https://splice.film.fun/pricing, then ask again.
- Permission error (403): reconnect and allow both permissions, or use a key with the
splice:generatescope. - Still stuck: email support@film.fun.
